Lab 3 deals with water treatment for hardness and pH. Neutralization (pH control), softening (CaCO3 precipitation) as well as the kinetics of limestone dissolution are discussed.
The Excel module Chemical softening allows for the calculation of severeal water treatment methods. First the CO2 removal by aeration is shown, then the removal of CO2 by reaction with CaCO3 (limestone filtration) and by reaction with caustic soda (NaOH).
Thereafter this Excel sheet is used for calculation of softening, with caustic soda (NaOH) or hydrated lime (Ca(OH)2), eventually in a split treatment setup.
The last part of the lab deals with the kinetics of limestone filtration using the PWP model.
